Publish date: 2024-06-21

Sorry Kevin Durant, but Lupita Nyong’o is 2014’s MVP. Within the past few months, the 12 Years A Slave star not only snagged an Oscar but inked a major deal with Miu Miu and was crowned the first African American brand ambassador for Lancome cosmetics. Now, the 31-year-old actress can now add a Vogue cover to her long list of accomplishments.

Inside the July 2014 issue, Nyong’o dishes on her rise to fame and gives some major face while donning colorful garments that reflect her eccentric sense of style. Known to turn heads on any stage, Nyong’o explained that her “red carpet” self is “just one aspect of me; it doesn’t represent the entirety of me, which I am at peace with.”

The Kenyan beauty also revealed that she is still very much adjusting to her a status as a celebrity.”It just feels like the entertainment industry exploded into my life,” said Nyong’o, who spent years working on smaller projects and earning her master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama. “People who seemed so distant all of a sudden were right in front of me and recognizing me — before I recognized them!”

Nyongo’s upcoming projects include a role in Star Wars Episode VII, a rumored feature in Southpaw alongside Forest Whitaker, and a film adaptation of the novel Americanah, in which she plans to both star in and produce.
